Plot wipes are normally a bad move from my perspective, but I feel it is appropriate for Rick and Morty being that it is not plot-driven. The plot was getting rather convoluted and that could have gotten in the way of Rick and Morty just doing it’s thang, which is going on crazy adventures. That is what I want. As for the episode itself, it had the great gags of the flavour only Rick and Morty can deliver. It made me want to go to McDonalds. In the past.

Rick and Morty smashed this one out of the park. After a long wait between seasons this episode had a lot to pay off in terms of audience expectations. We had a lot of questions that needed resolutions and I feel like this episode delivered many times over. This episode, still the standard 23 minutes, felt longer storywise with more action intense plot. This episode also does a big clean of house and I wonder how it will affect the rick and morty verse long term. I think this episode plays really well both leaving audiences satisfied and curious at the same time.

The return of Rick and Morty is a welcome one. The fast paced, gory, irreverent Sci-Fi adventure kicks off and resolves the ending of the previous season. They basically deal with it in the one episode which feels a little bit cheap but Rick and Morty’s strength is in the individual adventures that happens and wiping this plot away to do that is probably the right call although they still seem to have some running plot threads that will no doubt come into play later. The animation is solid, there are plenty of good gags and some pretty significant things do happen which makes you think what effects this will have on the Rick and Morty Universe.

We are back to the zany adventures! Great news! Not being much of a Mad Max fan, the setting of this one didn’t quite do it for me; I prefer more sci-fi-oriented stuff. Apart from that everything you love about Rick and Morty is on display here. It is funny, but it still makes us feel for the characters in its own special way.

On first viewing I feel like this episode let me down a little bit. Going from the epic conclusion to season 2 and the outstanding season 3 premier left me with a real jarring experience going to this episode because it is just a standard Rick and Morty adventure. I feel like I may be judging this episode too harshly but these are my initial reactions. That aside, I do think the quality is still there with some funny sight gags, and clever insight into how each member of the family is dealing with the Beth/Jerry divorce.

Episode 2 more or less continues from where episode 1 left with the aftermath of Beth and Jerry’s divorce. The episode basically deals with the kids and their coming to terms with that. Not normally something I would find compelling but Rick and Morty makes it entertaining by having all of it framed around a Mad Max inspired world. Filled with great little sight gags, a little social commentary and a little bit of heart, Rick and Morty episode 2 is well worth a watch.

For some bizarre reason, when it seemed like Rick was going to spend most of the episode as a pickle, I thought it was going to be boring. How could he possibly get out of this one? Obviously he was going to Rick his way out of it in the Rickiest way possible. The absurd situations Rick and Morty come up with are what make it worth watching for me. Juxtaposed with the relatively mundane but hilarious therapy scenes, this episode had so much to laugh at.

Since seeing the previews for this episode I was incredibly excited. The shared failing between Beth and Rick demonstrated just how well the writers know these characters and that little thing I like to call the human condition. But it was the concept alone that really won me over this episode. Watching Rick being put into an almost unwinnable situation and coming out on top, as a pickle no less was nothing short of wonderful laugh out loud comedy. I’m being a hundred percent honest here. I haven't laughed that hard in years.

Interestingly we’re still dealing with the aftermath of the divorce and how it affects all of the characters. This time focusing a lot more on Beth and Rick completely unwilling to accept the reality of the situation. Again like the previous episode, this family stuff is not normally something that would grab my interest but the episode even in the more mundane setting of the psychologist's’ office has writing that keeps it engaging. The other side story is essentially an excuse to tell a small, brutally violent homage to 90s action movies and it is so fun to watch.

As someone who enjoys picking apart things like superhero movies to the ire of a particular co-host, this episode really resonated with me. The way the episode was constructed was really clever and there were some great turn-arounds to set up for some hilarious jokes. Morty seems to be getting quite sassy in the last few episodes. He has stopped being a naive, dumb kid and has turned into someone who is capable of cleaning up after Rick. Can’t wait to see if this trend continues.

As a massive superhero fan I was dubious of this episode for two reasons. It needed to be a great parody and it didn't need to kick what I loved in the guts. The beauty here is that it is a great parody and Morty gives voice to fans of the superhero genre so I felt like I got the best of both worlds here.

The divorce is completely out of the picture this week and we get a Rick and Morty adventure that we have grown accustomed to. The show takes on superhero team up stories and rips them apart in a way only Rick and Morty can. The episode is hilarious, brutal and just works wonderfully as a parody of groups like the Avengers. Even with that we even get some real emotional resonance that happens and I don’t quite know how they manage to pull that off but the writers do make you feel for certain characters in a show as off the wall as this one.

This week on Rick and Jerry we have another whacky adventure. This is exactly what I want, Rick and Jerry; keep giving me that sweet goodness. Rick and Jerry go to a spa with an immortality field that revives you if you die. This is already a recipe for brilliance. There is a bit of stuff about Jerry’s divorce but I didn’t notice it all that much amid the zany hijinks Rick and Jerry got up to like they always do. After a little bit of a ricky start this season, it seems Rick and Jerry is back on track.

“It’s a Rick and Jerry Adventure!” Ricks exclamation pretty much sums this episode up. This episode was a welcome change up for me, it took a chance on moving out of the typical Rick and Morty adventure comfort zone and it works to tremendous comical effect. The highlight for me was seeing Rick deconstruction Jerry in a brutal but hilarious fashion and it’s just goes to show how well the writers of Rick and Morty know their characters.

This week it’s more adventures with Rick and….Jerry? Not the team up we were expecting but one that continues this season’s focus on the divorce. It hasn’t gotten in the way in past episodes but is much more prominent here. The essential essence of Rick and Morty is still here but things are ever so slightly less wacky. It trades away more interesting social commentary for the emotional resonance of the family bonding. Not quite what I normally want out of Rick and Morty but it still hits all the right notes and even with the divorce being more overt this episode it is still Rick and Morty even if it is Rick and Jerry.

Is a barrel even enough to contain the laughs I had here? Self-contained adventures are when Rick and Morty is at its finest. Rick and Morty takes an abstract concept like “aspects of personality” and takes it literally. That is like something I would do if I was a super-genius. We get a fascinating look at the deconstruction of the personalities of both Rick and Morty while they battle it out between themselves. I also have to give special mention to the prelude to the episode which was a brilliantly funny hommage to Star Wars.

This week’s episode offers a lot of insight into our leads and what they think are the detrimental aspects of their personalities. Of course this in depth look at the character's psychology is done in fun and entertaining Sci-Fi ways. But it made me think about what my own “Toxic” personality traits and if I remove them would I detract from myself like Rick and end up in a healthier space like Morty? It’s a lofty episode of the season if you take the time to deconstruct it a little further.

The divorce stuff is completely out of focus this week and I think this episode shows the quality of this show when it isn’t as bogged down with more mundane drama stuff. It involves Rick and Morty going on an adventure that goes completely off the rails and the two dealing with the Sci-Fi concept of being able to immediately remove one’s “Toxins”. It is a neat idea especially as we see what exactly that means for the two characters, how they change and what we consider to be healthy. It’s a great episode that explores a cool idea and as always has great animation and jokes.

In any other show, this would be a throw away episode pieced together because the writer couldn’t come up with anything good that doesn’t even feature the main characters. But this is Rick and Morty where there exists an infinite number of universes, Ricks, Mortys and, hence, main characters. Ricklantis Mixup is cliche after cliche. That would normally be bad, but Rick and Morty uses them how they should be; to intimate more meaning than the words and images themselves convey. This wasn’t a viewing experience, it was a feeling experience. Calling this the best Rick and Morty episode ever is both true and somehow a disservice.

A lot of people are describing this episode of the series as the best so far and I have to agree with them. The pulp fiction convention, taking multiple characters and intertwining their stories throughout a much larger concept is on play here. It could run this risk of being a hackneyed approach to an episode but it isn't, it’s wonderful. I loved the homages paid to films like “Stand by me” the shared moments between the Morty’s was heart warming, tough in typical Rick and Morty style was also heartbreaking and that’s what we expect from this nihilistic series. We also see the return of a character that I have been waiting to see for a long time, he returns big to the series and I can’t wait to see what he does next.

For me this is the best Rick and Morty episode yet. The way it tells all of these stories that flesh out the world of the Citadel of Ricks is perfect. It’s not often where Rick and Morty follows up on previous seasons but this brings back in a big way things that happen in season 1 and the start of this season to give some really compelling stuff. Each story seems to serve a similar purpose to the television anthology series that we have been treated to in previous seasons however this time they are all linked together in a small way and feed into the overall world building. Each story, though cliche, is spun slightly to just hit all of the notes you would expect out of a Rick and Morty adventure and despite the irreverence of the show as a whole even in these small tales it is still able to stir the emotions. I don’t know how they pulled this off but it shows what the creators of this show are capable of.

This week Rick and Morty eschews making us feel, instead giving us some light, entertaining Rick and Morty jokes. There isn’t a bigger picture for everything to fit into here. No overarching themes to get me to consider. This is Rick and Morty at its simplest and it came with many home runs. Despite the vignettes largely being unrelated they were wrapped up in a neat little joke of itself, that being memories of Morty’s that Rick had decided to remove. We also got a bonus memory of Jerry’s after the credits. It was all great stuff.

The replacement of the interdimensional cable anthology episode with this new concept fell very flat with me. Especially following last week’s amazing episode. Interdimensional cable stands out and is memorable where this episode really had trouble finding a distinct voice. It’s still Rick and Morty and you're still going to enjoy it but it’s forgettable and that’s a first for this otherwise amazing series.

With the last episode being what it was, I was surprised for this one to be an interdimensional cable episode. Though not really. Instead we’re dealing with all of the memories that Rick has plucked from Morty’s mind for various reasons. It is a good episode dealing with that Sci-Fi concept and it hits all of the hallmarks you would want out of both an Rick and Morty episode and an interdimensional cable episode. The only bad thing about this episode is that it takes place after the brilliance of the previous and although it is still quality, it is a bit outshone by its predecessor.

This week on Rick and Morty it is Beth’s turn to go on an adventure with Rick. The world they find themselves in has exactly the hilarious and horrifying twist I only expect from Rick and Morty. I really enjoyed the main story here; it has that special quirk we have come to love and we also get some cool insight into Beth. The side story featuring Jerry and kids didn’t quite hit the mark with me - it felt rather uninspired compared to everything else that was going on - but it still had some snappy jokes memorable scenes. Rick and Morty is hitting 6 after 6 this season.

This episode did what for what me what the whole series has been unable to accomplish so far and that is to demonstrate a true link between father (Rick) and daughter (Beth). The writing shows not only how the two are so similar in both their intelligence and dissociation but does it in true Rick and Morty fashion with a hilarious subplot of Beth being a sociopath. The B story with Jerry and the kids was somewhat engaging with one or two jokes hitting well. But ultimately it was more miss than hit. I feel that if they had been able to bring everything to the table with the A and B story then this would have been a fantastic episode instead it’s just a good one.

This was a fantastic episode the RIck and Morty. Though it goes back and deals with the aftermath of the divorce it brings in so many cool things and the character stuff is done so well that it didn’t bring down the episode at all. Beth and Rick deal with her childhood and we get an interesting story set in the imaginary world that Rick created for Beth which is not quite as it seems. We also get the kids being forced to spend time with Jerry and the episode does a wonderful job of continuing to show Jerry being Jerry in a way that hilariously impacts directly on his children. The episode is a fun ride and allows the parent characters room to develop while giving us all the stuff we love about Rick and Morty.

If you are expecting something incredible for the last episode of Rick and Morty you will be disappointed; if you wanted a classic episode with plenty of zazz then you will be ready for more. Snappy jokes, both visual and otherwise, were non-stop in this finale. A standout for me was the fight between Rick and the President. For some, Jerry getting back into the family might be a step in the wrong direction in the sense that it is a ‘plot’ reset. I am in favour of this change; Rick and Morty isn’t a show that needs to be serialised and I enjoy it most when an episode can stand on its own and I hope this is a herald for next season.

If you had put this episode anywhere else in the season I would have been on board. Jerry returning to the family was the only “Season Finale” worthy moment in the entire episode. Which I ultimately found trite and a really weak conclusion to the Divorce storyline. All the effort that went into Beth no more than an episode ago is now completely wasted. Ricklantis would have been a much more suitable conclusion to the season. Otherwise if you watch this episode outside of the “Finale” perimeter then it’s perfectly serviceable with a few LOL moments.

The ending of Rick and Morty was fun and returns us to the status quo but ultimately I found it to be a little but superficial. It is essentially a fast paced break up story between Rick and the President with the B story being Beth trying to grapple with the idea that she is a potential clone. When Rick and Morty is at its best as with most sci-fi is where it explores a cool sci fi concept, think the Meesix or The Ricks Must be Crazy. This episode is more, what would a break-up story look like with Rick and the president which is as far as the thought really goes. There is fun to be had in the spectacle, jokes and imaginative technology but ultimately there isn’t much that sticks with you when all is said and done.

Rick and Morty is as solid as you would expect although the brilliance of the first two seasons still leaves and impression and though this season is still great, it feels less groundbreaking and memorable. Most of the season is ever so slightly bogged down with handling the aftermath of the divorce but there are still adventures to be had and the divorce angle does give the characters room to grow or make their flaws more entertaining. The season doesn't qute stand up to the lofty expectations of the previous seasons but it delivers some entertaining adventures and the Citadel of Ricks is quite possible the best episode of the entire show.
